How to get my hair from black to medium or dark brown?

i have mexican/asian hair that's thick and barely wavey (only when i dont blow dry it straight). how do i get it a little bit lighter without ruining it? i tried a garnier hair dye box but it was way too brassy so i dyed it back to black. or if i should go to a salon, how do you find a good colorist that knows what they're doing? thank ya

ask them WHERE they went to school.

I went to Penneys and they did a HORRIBLE job. It was not what I wanted at all.

Sometimes its just luck no matter what you pay . I looked like a skunk at Penneys and I had to pay 100$...
